On Two Decades of Midnight

Midnight has officially turned 20 years old! That is huge for a kitty!

Midnight and I have gone through so much since I first found her while in high school! She’s lived in every place with me – my mom’s house, my first apartment, a duplex we rented, our condo, and our current house. She’s been around for every job I’ve had and adapted to being home alone more than I’d like to admit. She’s seen me graduate high school, college, and been around for all my Scrum and Agile certifications. She handled Zach and I moving in together and adapted to Max, Biscuit (several years later), and has now embraced Gabby and Tot!

I’m amazed at how well she’s doing. Her halfway-through-the-year appointment was today and despite having had kidney disease for the last five years, she is doing so well! Kidney levels remain stable, her weight is about as high as it’s been in years, and she’s eating very well. Zach and I take great care of her and make sure she gets her medicine and kidney food daily.

She’s a happy little kitty. She’s adapted well to having siblings! She enjoys a varied diet of prescription food and occasionally, rotisserie chicken. She loves being held like a baby, carried around like a sack of potatoes during our daily house walks, and loves sleeping in various cardboard boxes. I know she loves me and I see it constantly. When she sees me, she meows loudly (especially if I come back from a trip after a few days), she nuzzles my shoulder with her face when I pick her up, and every time I pick her up, she’s full of loud purrs.

Midnight is my baby and a big reason that I started this blog. I’ve learned so much about her and cat care in the last 20 years. Her getting the kidney disease diagnosis helped me to expand my own knowledge of how to manage the disease and what works for her and how she responds to specific treatments. I’ve learned, tried, and tweaked so much of what I do to ensure she’s staying healthy and happy.

She’s helped me get through hard times, been my little companion through so many highs and lows, and is always happy to cuddle up and take a nap. I’m so grateful for her and all the time we’ve had together. I love her so much!

Happy Birthday, Midnight! Here’s to another 20 years!
