On Elderly Baby

Midnight continues to be my baby.

Midnight’s 6 month check up came early! She had a UTI, which led to a urine analysis, which led to doing her 6 month kidney bloodwork early, which led to finding out Midnight has very calcified kidney.

But she is resilient.

Aside from me having anxiety every time she has a minor ailment, everything is mostly fine. Her bloodwork came back great – kidney levels are very stable and have been for years. She gained more weight, which is crazy and good for a kitty that weighed 4.9lbs at her lowest. She’s close to 7lbs (the doctor said 6.1lbs, but prior to her UTI starting up last night, she was at 7lbs so we’re going with 7lbs)! Mouth and teeth look pretty good. She’s on antibiotics and some pain meds for the UTI (and those meds also help with arthritis too).

The only new discovery was the calcification of one of her kidneys. The doctor explained that it’s 1/2 -2/3rds calcified and that might explain a little of the blood in her urine. There’s also not anything we can do to reverse it. She is on prednisone and the doctor said that will help though. Also, she only really needs one, right? RIGHT?!!!

I am grateful. I’m grateful her health has been generally good. Yes, she has kidney disease and other ailments that would be bound to affect a 19.5 year old cat, but overall, she is doing very well for a cat that’s 92 (in cat years).

I often say Midnight will live forever. I (halfway) know that’s not true. I want to believe she will, but I’m not totally delusional. I know one day she will pass away and while I hope that day is in the distant future, I am so grateful that I’ve had her for as long as I have and I’m so grateful I’ve been able to give her everything she’s needed to live a long, healthy, and happy life. I’ve done everything I can for her and I will continue to do that. I’m also a believer that I will see her again one day.

I just love her so much.
